How to Paint a Table Shabby Chic Style

Shabby chic, a design style that combines distressed finishes with vintage or antique decor, is a popular choice for those who love the look of timeworn elegance. If you're looking to give your table a shabby chic makeover, here's a step-by-step guide to help you achieve the perfect distressed finish:

Materials You'll Need:

  • Table
  • Painter's tape
  • Sandpaper (120-grit and 220-grit)
  • Tack cloth
  • Primer
  • Paint
  • Clear wax
  • Steel wool
  • Wax brush

Step 1: Prepare the Table

Remove any hardware from the table, such as drawer pulls or hinges. Clean the table thoroughly with a damp cloth to remove any dirt or grease. Tape off any areas you don't want to paint, such as drawer interiors or the underside of the table.

Step 2: Sand the Table

Lightly sand the table with 120-grit sandpaper to remove any existing finish or paint. For a more distressed look, you can sand deeper in some areas to expose the bare wood. Once you're finished sanding, wipe down the table with a tack cloth to remove any dust.

Step 3: Prime the Table

Apply a coat of primer to the table to help the paint adhere better. Allow the primer to dry completely before moving on to the next step.

Step 4: Paint the Table

Choose a paint color that complements the style of your table and the decor of your home. Apply two coats of paint, allowing each coat to dry completely before applying the next. If you want a more distressed look, you can apply the paint unevenly in some areas to create a more aged appearance.

Step 5: Distress the Table

Once the paint is completely dry, use 220-grit sandpaper to lightly sand the edges and corners of the table. You can also sand other areas of the table to create a worn look. Be careful not to sand too much, as you don't want to remove the paint completely.

Step 6: Apply Clear Wax

Apply a thin coat of clear wax to the table to protect the finish and give it a subtle sheen. Use a wax brush to apply the wax, and buff it into the wood with a clean cloth.

Step 7: Distress the Wax

To add some extra character to the table, use steel wool to lightly distress the wax in some areas. This will create a more aged and worn look.

Step 8: Reattach Hardware

Once the wax has dried completely, reattach any hardware you removed in Step 1. Your shabby chic table is now complete!
