Coffin Coffee Table DIY: A Gothic Masterpiece for Your Living Room

Coffin-shaped coffee tables have become increasingly popular in recent years due to their unique and stylish appearance. These tables add a touch of gothic elegance to any living room and can be a great conversation starter among guests. If you're looking for a unique DIY project, building a coffin coffee table is a great option. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you create your own:

Materials Required:

  • 1 sheet of 3/4 inch thick plywood (4 feet x 8 feet)
  • 1/2 inch thick plywood (2 feet x 4 feet)
  • 2 inch diameter PVC pipe (10 feet)
  • PVC elbows (8 pieces)
  • PVC tees (4 pieces)
  • PVC glue
  • Wood glue
  • Screws
  • Nails
  • Stain or paint (optional)
  • Sandpaper
  • Decorative hardware (optional)

Tools Required:

  • Saw
  • Drill
  • Tape measure
  • Level
  • Clamps
  • Hammer
  • Paintbrush (optional)

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Cutting the Plywood:

Using the saw, cut the 3/4 inch plywood into the following pieces:

  • 4 pieces (24 x 18 inches) for the top and bottom of the coffin
  • 4 pieces (18 x 12 inches) for the sides of the coffin
  • 2 pieces (18 x 6 inches) for the ends of the coffin

2. Assembling the Coffin Shape:

Place two of the 24 x 18 inch pieces on a flat surface with a slight overlap in the middle. Use wood glue to secure them together. Repeat this process with the other two 24 x 18 inch pieces. Once the top and bottom of the coffin are assembled, attach the sides and ends using wood glue and screws. Make sure to use clamps to hold the pieces in place while the glue dries.

3. Creating the PVC Frame:

Cut the PVC pipe into the following lengths:

  • 4 pieces (24 inches long) for the legs
  • 4 pieces (18 inches long) for the top and bottom of the frame
  • 4 pieces (12 inches long) for the sides of the frame

Assemble the PVC frame using the PVC glue, elbows, and tees. Make sure the frame is square and sturdy.

4. Attaching the Coffin to the Frame:

Place the coffin on top of the PVC frame and center it. Use screws to secure the coffin to the frame. Make sure the screws are long enough to go through the plywood and into the PVC pipe.

5. Finishing Touches:

Sand down the coffin and PVC frame to smooth out any rough edges. You can stain or paint the coffin and frame to match your desired style. You can also add decorative hardware, such as handles or rivets, to give the coffee table a unique look.

6. Enjoy Your New Coffin Coffee Table:

Once the coffin coffee table is complete, you can enjoy it as a unique and stylish addition to your living room. Its unique shape and appearance will surely be a conversation starter among your guests.

Additional Tips:

  • For a more authentic coffin look, you can add a curved top to the coffin using a jigsaw.
  • If you want to use the coffin coffee table as a storage space, you can add a hinged lid to the top.
  • You can use different types of wood for the coffin, such as pine, oak, or mahogany.
  • Be careful when working with PVC pipes and glue, as they can be harmful if inhaled or ingested.
  • Make sure to wear safety goggles and gloves when using power tools.
