Plans To Build A Lift Top Coffee Table

A lift-top coffee table is a great way to add extra functionality to your living room. It can be used as a regular coffee table, but the top can also be lifted up to create a comfortable workspace or dining area. Building a lift-top coffee table is a relatively simple project that can be completed in a weekend with basic woodworking skills.

The first step is to gather your materials. You will need:

  • 1 sheet of 3/4-inch plywood (4 feet by 8 feet)
  • 1 sheet of 1/2-inch plywood (4 feet by 8 feet)
  • 2 pieces of 2x4 lumber (8 feet long)
  • 2 pieces of 1x4 lumber (8 feet long)
  • 1 pair of lift-top hinges
  • 1 pair of coffee table legs
  • Wood screws
  • Wood glue

Once you have your materials, you can begin building the coffee table. Start by cutting the plywood to size. The top of the coffee table will be made from the 3/4-inch plywood, and the bottom will be made from the 1/2-inch plywood. The top should be cut to a size of 48 inches by 24 inches, and the bottom should be cut to a size of 46 inches by 22 inches.

Next, you will need to assemble the frame of the coffee table. The frame will be made from the 2x4 lumber. Cut the 2x4s to the following lengths:

  • 2 pieces at 48 inches long
  • 2 pieces at 24 inches long

Assemble the frame by attaching the 24-inch pieces to the ends of the 48-inch pieces using wood screws. Make sure that the frame is square before you tighten the screws.

Once the frame is assembled, you can attach the plywood tops. Start by attaching the bottom plywood to the frame using wood screws. Then, attach the top plywood to the frame using wood glue and screws. Make sure that the top is flush with the edge of the frame.

Next, you will need to install the lift-top hinges. The hinges will allow the top of the coffee table to be lifted up. Position the hinges on the underside of the top plywood, and secure them with screws. Make sure that the hinges are aligned properly so that the top will lift up evenly.

Finally, you can attach the coffee table legs. The legs should be attached to the bottom of the frame using wood screws. Make sure that the legs are evenly spaced and that the coffee table is level when it is placed on the ground.

Your lift-top coffee table is now complete! Enjoy using it as a regular coffee table, or lift up the top to create a comfortable workspace or dining area.
