How to Sand and Restain Table
Sanding and restaining a table is a relatively simple project that can give your furniture a new lease on life. With the right tools and materials, you can sand and restain a table in just a few hours. Here are the steps on how to do it:
Materials you'll need:
- Sandpaper (80-grit, 120-grit, and 220-grit)
- Sanding block or orbital sander
- Tack cloth
- Wood stain
- Rags or a brush
- Polyurethane (optional)
Steps:
- Prepare the table. Remove any hardware from the table, such as knobs or handles. If the table has a finish, you will need to remove it. You can do this by sanding the finish off with 80-grit sandpaper.
- Sand the table. Start by sanding the table with 80-grit sandpaper. This will remove any old finish or paint. Once you have sanded the table with 80-grit sandpaper, switch to 120-grit sandpaper and then 220-grit sandpaper. Sand in the direction of the wood grain.
- Wipe down the table. Use a tack cloth to wipe down the table and remove any dust from sanding.
- Apply wood stain. Apply a thin coat of wood stain to the table using a rag or a brush. Allow the stain to dry completely according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Apply polyurethane (optional). If you want to protect the stain and give the table a more durable finish, you can apply a coat of polyurethane. Allow the polyurethane to dry completely according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Once you have finished sanding and restaining the table, you can reassemble it and enjoy your newly refinished furniture.
