How to Refinish a Farmhouse Table

Farmhouse tables are a popular choice for their rustic and charming style. They can be made from a variety of materials, including wood, metal, and plastic. If your farmhouse table is looking a little worse for wear, you can refinish it to give it a new lease on life. Here are the steps on how to refinish a farmhouse table:

1. Gather Your Supplies

Before you start, you'll need to gather the following supplies:

  • Sandpaper (120-grit, 220-grit, and 320-grit)
  • Orbital sander
  • Tack cloth
  • Wood filler
  • Putty knife
  • Primer
  • Paint or stain
  • Polyurethane
  • Paintbrush or roller

2. Prepare the Table

The first step is to prepare the table for refinishing. This involves removing any hardware, such as knobs or handles, and sanding the table to roughen up the surface. Start with 120-grit sandpaper and gradually work your way up to 320-grit sandpaper. Be sure to sand in the direction of the wood grain.

3. Fill in Any Holes or Dents

Once the table is sanded, you can fill in any holes or dents with wood filler. Use a putty knife to apply the wood filler and then allow it to dry completely. Once the wood filler is dry, sand it smooth with 220-grit sandpaper.

4. Prime the Table

The next step is to prime the table. This will help the paint or stain to adhere to the wood. Apply a coat of primer to the table and allow it to dry completely. Once the primer is dry, lightly sand it with 220-grit sandpaper.

5. Paint or Stain the Table

Now you're ready to paint or stain the table. If you're painting the table, use a paintbrush or roller to apply two coats of paint. If you're staining the table, use a cloth or brush to apply the stain and then wipe off any excess. Allow the paint or stain to dry completely.

6. Apply Polyurethane

The final step is to apply polyurethane to the table. This will protect the paint or stain and give the table a durable finish. Apply two to three coats of polyurethane, allowing each coat to dry completely before applying the next. Once the polyurethane is dry, your table is finished!
