How to Build a Simple Square Coffee Table

A coffee table is a great way to add style and functionality to your living room. It can be used for displaying décor, storing magazines, or simply putting your feet up. Building a square coffee table is a relatively simple project that can be completed in a few hours.

Materials:

  • 1x4 pine boards (8)
  • 1x6 pine boards (4)
  • 3/4-inch plywood (1 piece)
  • Wood glue
  • 1-1/4-inch wood screws
  • 2-inch wood screws
  • Brad nails
  • Sandpaper
  • Paint or stain (optional)

Tools:

  • Circular saw
  • Drill
  • Countersink bit
  • Nail gun
  • Sander
  • Clamps
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil

Instructions:

1. Cut the wood:

Cut the 1x4 pine boards to the following lengths: 24 inches (4 pieces) and 18 inches (4 pieces). Cut the 1x6 pine boards to 24 inches in length. Cut the plywood to 24 inches square.

2. Assemble the frame:

Apply wood glue to the edges of one of the 24-inch 1x4 pine boards. Attach the two 18-inch 1x4 pine boards to the ends of the 24-inch board, forming a rectangle. Use 1-1/4-inch wood screws to secure the boards. Repeat this step to create a second rectangle.

3. Attach the plywood top:

Place the plywood on top of the frame, aligning the edges. Use 1-1/4-inch wood screws to attach the plywood to the frame. Countersink the screws using a countersink bit.

4. Attach the aprons:

Apply wood glue to the edges of the 1x6 pine boards. Attach the aprons to the inside of the frame, flush with the bottom edge of the plywood top. Use 2-inch wood screws to secure the aprons.

5. Reinforce the corners:

Use brad nails to reinforce the corners of the coffee table. Drive the nails through the plywood top and into the corners of the frame.

6. Sand and finish:

Sand the coffee table smooth using sandpaper. You can paint or stain the coffee table if desired. Allow the finish to dry completely before using the coffee table.

Tips:

  • Use a level to ensure that the frame is square.
  • Countersink the screws to prevent them from protruding from the surface of the coffee table.
  • Add felt pads to the bottom of the coffee table legs to protect your floor.
  • Decorate the coffee table with your favorite books, magazines, or décor.
