Convert Trunk To Coffee Table: A Step-by-Step Guide

An old trunk can be upcycled into a beautiful and functional coffee table. This is a great way to add a touch of vintage charm to your home while also giving an old piece of furniture a new life. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to convert a trunk to a coffee table:

Materials you'll need:

  • Old trunk
  • 4 legs (optional)
  • Screws
  • Drill
  • Paint or stain (optional)
  • Sandpaper
  • Polyurethane
  • Felt pads (optional)

Steps:

1. Clean the trunk:

Remove any dirt or debris from the trunk with a damp cloth. If the trunk is particularly dirty, you can use a mild soap solution to clean it.

2. Sand the trunk:

If you want to paint or stain the trunk, you need to sand it first to create a smooth surface. Start by sanding with coarse sandpaper to remove any rough or uneven areas. Then switch to fine sandpaper to smooth the surface.

3. Paint or stain the trunk (optional):

If you want to change the color of the trunk, you can paint or stain it. If you're painting the trunk, use multiple coats of paint and allow each coat to dry completely before applying the next. If you're staining the trunk, apply a thin coat of stain and allow it to penetrate the wood for a few minutes before wiping off any excess.

4. Attach the legs (optional):

If you want to raise the trunk off the ground, you can attach legs. You can find legs at most hardware stores or online. To attach the legs, drill a hole in each corner of the bottom of the trunk. Then screw the legs into the holes.

5. Add felt pads (optional):

To protect your floor from scratches, you can add felt pads to the bottom of the trunk. Cut the felt pads to size and stick them to the bottom of the trunk.

6. Finish the trunk:

To protect the finish of the trunk, apply a coat of polyurethane. Polyurethane is a clear finish that will help to seal the paint or stain and protect it from scratches and wear.

7. Enjoy your new coffee table:

Once the polyurethane has dried completely, your new coffee table is ready to use. Enjoy your new piece of furniture!
