How to Refinish a Veneer Coffee Table: A Step-by-Step Guide
Veneer coffee tables are a beautiful and versatile piece of furniture that can add a touch of elegance to any room. However, over time, the veneer can become damaged or faded, leaving the table looking dull and unattractive. If you're looking to restore your veneer coffee table to its former glory, here's a step-by-step guide on how to refinish it.
Materials You'll Need:
- Sandpaper (120-grit, 220-grit)
- Tack cloth
- Wood cleaner
- Wood stain (optional)
- Polyurethane
- Foam brush
- Clean rags
Step 1: Prepare the Table
Remove any hardware from the table and clean it thoroughly with a wood cleaner. This will remove any dirt or debris that could interfere with the refinishing process.
Step 2: Sand the Veneer
Start by sanding the table with 120-grit sandpaper. Sand in the direction of the grain, using long, smooth strokes. Once you've sanded the entire table, switch to 220-grit sandpaper and sand again to smooth out any scratches.
Step 3: Clean the Veneer
Use a tack cloth to remove any sanding dust from the table. Then, wipe down the table with a clean, damp rag to remove any remaining dust.
Step 4: Stain the Veneer (Optional)
If you want to change the color of the veneer, apply a coat of wood stain using a foam brush. Apply the stain in the direction of the grain, using even strokes. Allow the stain to dry completely.
Step 5: Apply Polyurethane
Apply a thin coat of polyurethane to the table using a foam brush. Again, apply the polyurethane in the direction of the grain, using even strokes. Allow the polyurethane to dry completely.
Step 6: Sand and Re-coat
Once the first coat of polyurethane is dry, lightly sand the table with 220-grit sandpaper to smooth out any rough spots. Wipe down the table with a tack cloth to remove any sanding dust. Then, apply a second coat of polyurethane.
Step 7: Allow to Dry
Allow the polyurethane to dry completely. This may take several hours or even overnight. Once the polyurethane is dry, your veneer coffee table is refinished!
Tips:
- Use a light touch when sanding the veneer. Sanding too aggressively can damage the veneer.
- Be sure to apply thin coats of polyurethane. Applying thick coats can cause the polyurethane to wrinkle or bubble.
- Allow each coat of polyurethane to dry completely before sanding or applying the next coat.
- If you're not sure how to refinish a veneer coffee table, it's always best to consult with a professional.
