Upholstering a Coffee Table Ottoman: A Step-by-Step Guide

Coffee table ottomans, with their dual purpose of providing seating and storage, are versatile furniture pieces that add both style and function to any living space. Upholstering a coffee table ottoman is a great way to give it a fresh look, match it to your existing décor, or simply restore it to its former glory. While it may seem like a daunting task, with the right materials, tools, and instructions, it's a project that can be completed in a few steps.

Materials:

Before you begin, gather all the necessary materials:

  • Fabric of your choice (sufficient to cover the ottoman top, sides, and bottom with extra for seams)
  • Upholstery foam (enough to cover the ottoman top and sides)
  • Batting (optional, for added cushioning)
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine or needle and thread
  • Upholstery staples
  • Staple gun
  • Measuring tape
  • Chalk or fabric marker
  • Pins
  • Screwdriver (if the ottoman has a removable top)
  • Step-by-Step Guide:

    1. Measure and Cut the Fabric:

Measure the length, width, and height of the ottoman top, sides, and bottom. Add 2-3 inches to each measurement for seam allowances. Cut the fabric accordingly.

    2. Attach the Foam:

If using foam, cut it to the same size as the ottoman top and sides. Apply a thin layer of spray adhesive to the ottoman top and press the foam onto it. Repeat the process for the sides.

    3. Add Batting (Optional):

If desired, cut the batting to the same size as the ottoman top and sides. Place it over the foam, securing it with pins.

    4. Attach the Fabric:

Place the fabric right side down on a flat surface. Center the ottoman top on the fabric and secure it with pins. Fold the fabric around the edges of the ottoman top, tucking it in neatly. Pin the fabric in place. Stitch or staple the fabric to the ottoman top, starting from the center and working your way out.

Repeat the process for the sides of the ottoman. Fold the fabric around the edges of the sides, tucking it in neatly. Pin the fabric in place. Staple the fabric to the sides of the ottoman, starting from the top and working your way down.

For the bottom of the ottoman, fold the fabric around the edges, tucking it in neatly. Pin the fabric in place. Staple the fabric to the bottom of the ottoman.

    5. Finishing Touches:

If the ottoman has a removable top, reattach it to the base. Fluff up the cushions and arrange them on the ottoman. Enjoy your newly upholstered coffee table ottoman!

Upholstering a coffee table ottoman is a fun and rewarding project that can transform the look of your living space. With a little patience and attention to detail, you can create a custom piece that perfectly matches your style and décor.
