Transform Your Coffee Table into a Cozy Ottoman
Ottomans are versatile and comfortable additions to any living space. If you're looking to add an extra touch of style and functionality to your home décor, consider turning your existing coffee table into a makeshift ottoman. This simple DIY project is both budget-friendly and rewarding, and it can create a unique piece of furniture that complements your existing décor.
Gather Your Materials
To turn a coffee table into an ottoman, you'll need the following materials:
- Coffee table with a solid base
- 4 legs (either pre-made or cut to size)
- Upholstery fabric
- Foam padding
- Staple gun
- Screwdriver
- Measuring tape
- Fabric scissors
Prepare the Coffee Table
Begin by removing any existing legs or supports from the coffee table. If necessary, sand down any rough edges or splinters to create a smooth surface. Measure the height that you want the ottoman to be and cut four legs to that length.
Attach the Legs
Center the legs on the underside of the coffee table base and secure them with screws. Make sure the legs are evenly spaced and perpendicular to the surface. If desired, add a dab of wood glue to the joints for extra strength.
Measure and Cut the Foam
Measure the top surface of the coffee table base and cut a piece of foam to fit snugly inside. The thickness of the foam will determine the softness of the ottoman. If desired, use two layers of foam for extra cushioning.
Upholster the Ottoman
Place the foam on top of the coffee table base and center it. Cut a piece of upholstery fabric large enough to cover the foam and wrap around the edges of the base. Pull the fabric taut and staple it to the underside of the base, working around the edges and corners.
Finishing Touches
Once the fabric is secured, use a pair of scissors to trim any excess material around the edges. If desired, you can add decorative details such as piping, tufting, or trim to give the ottoman a more finished look. Your newly transformed ottoman is now ready to enjoy as a cozy and stylish addition to your living room.
Tips
- Choose a fabric that is durable and easy to clean.
- If the coffee table has a hollow base, fill it with beans or foam for added sturdiness.
- Use a heavy-duty staple gun to ensure the fabric stays securely attached.
- Experiment with different fabric patterns and colors to create a one-of-a-kind ottoman.
